Today is February 23, 2018 -
Federation’s annual campaign is critical to the funding of our mission. Every day we work to build and maintain a strong and united Jewish community, to ensure the creative survival and continuity of the Jewish people, and to meet Jewish needs locally, in Israel, and around the world.
Unfortunately, there are times when our annual campaign is not enough. In times of crisis, we come together and respond. Throughout history (1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 2006, and 2012), Israeli prime ministers have turned to the Federations for help, and American Jewry has always responded to their call.
This is one of those times. On July 7, Israel launched Operation Protective Edge to intensify defensive efforts against Hamas. To date, hundreds of powerful rockets have been fired on Israeli cities from Gaza. 75% of Israelis lie within their range, but no one is immune to their effects. We are not being asked to fund the military, but rather to support the millions affected by the terrorism.
The need for trauma relief has never been higher. We need to move 36,000 children out of harm’s way. We need to refurbish hundreds of bomb shelters. We need to support 2,500 new immigrants who are overwhelmed by the situation.
Even if peace should happen today, halevai, Federations have been asked to raise $10 million, immediately, to get the country back up and running.
I need to emphasize 2 important ideas to make sure that there is no confusion:
Please join me Tuesday, July 15, at 7:00 p.m. The community will be gathering at Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany for “Stop the Sirens – Emergency Rally for Victims of Terror.” We are grateful to have Dr. Stephen Berk as our keynote speaker. Professor Berk will bring us up to date on the situation in Israel and share his thoughts on what may happen next. We hope to raise a meaningful amount at this event. Please bring your checkbooks and wear blue to show your solidarity with Israel.
