Conference Highlights

I spent the last week with colleagues from around the country at the Intermediate Federations Executive Directors Conference.

In unpacking all of the lectures, discussions, materials, and informal conversations, I’ve extracted three major themes that I’ll be sharing with you over the next few weeks.

  1. The changing role of Jewish Federations: what has been driving the need for change, and how, in turn, do we drive the change for our Jewish community?
  2. When there is discord in our Jewish community, like over the Iranian Nuclear Deal or Israel advocacy, what leadership role does the Jewish Federation need to take?
  3. Who are these millennials? They are on our campuses, in our workplaces, and they are our future leaders. We joke that we need to be nice to them because they will be picking our nursing homes, but they will also be running the homes and, hopefully, financially supporting them. How do we get there?

It was reassuring seeing that in some areas, our Jewish Federation is ahead of the curve. Our strategic plan, new allocations model, and commitments to PJ Library and Next Dor are very forward thinking and have positioned us well.

In other areas, it was humbling to see how much work that we have in front of us.

Stay tuned.
