Jews have been in America since colonial times. After millennia of persecution and anti-Semitism, promises of religious freedom resonated with early settlers as they resonated with late 19th century immigrants and post-Holocaust immigrants. Today, America is home to more than five million Jews, about 40% of the world’s Jewish population.
Judaism has thrived in the United States. We have synagogues, schools, centers, and communities. Jews have thrived, with unprecedented wealth and prosperity. It’s certainly not all perfect, and we have a lot of work to do, but this weekend, let’s celebrate our freedoms and our democracy in this great country.
