Today is February 23, 2018 -
These are challenging times. People are concerned and looking to Federation for leadership and education, both within the Jewish community and for the community at large.
Bomb threats, cemetery destruction, and desecration with swastikas are becoming commonplace. Over the last few weeks, Shelly and I have met with representatives of the FBI and the NYS Counter Terrorism Intelligence Unit. Last week, Mark Weintraub, Adam Chaskin, (executive directors of the Schenectady and Albany Jewish Community Centers respectively) and I met with NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo and the superintendent of the NYS police.
In two weeks, to kick off a new educational breakfast series, we are organizing a town-hall style meeting for our community to hear directly from various levels of law enforcement what they are doing to keep us safe and, perhaps more importantly, what precautions we can take for our own safety. We will also have opportunities to ask questions. Register here for this March 24 program.
On April 25, Professor Stephen Berk will brief us on this new wave of anti-Semitism. Register here for this program.
Finally, as promised a few weeks ago, we have secured Riva Silverman, Vice President for External Affairs at HIAS, to discuss “A Jewish Response to the Global Refugee Crisis” on May 1. Register here for this program.
We have added these programs to complement our ongoing efforts to educate the community at large. In partnership with Holocaust Survivors and Friends Education Center, we will be hosting Professor Peter Hayes, who will first lecture to local social studies teachers on the Holocaust and then speak to our larger community. Register for this March 21 evening program here.
There is a lot going on. Stay informed with our weekly newsletter and our community calendar. And, if there is more that you would like to see us do, please let me know.
