Today is March 28, 2017 -
You know that I am a huge fan of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF). They are the founders and primary funders of the PJ Library program, and we have collaborated with them for several years on this initiative. Furthermore, many in our community are beneficiaries of their generosity through their JCamp180 initiative. Last night we took our first major step in potentially bringing the HGF “Life & Legacy” program to our community.
“Life & Legacy is a partnership program of HGF that assists communities across North America, through partnerships with Jewish Federations, to promote after-lifetime giving to benefit Jewish day schools, synagogues, social service organizations, and other Jewish entities.”
Last night, we brought together 60 community leaders from most of our local Jewish institutions to learn together about whether this incredible program might be a good fit for our community. While the upside for the community is enormous, the cost to Federation is not insignificant. Predictably, one community leader asked, “What’s in it for Federation?”
For decades, Federation has earned a reputation of being a fundraising machine, and consequently, people have been confused about our true mission. “The mission of Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York is to build and maintain a strong and united Jewish community in order to ensure the creative survival and continuity of the Jewish people.” If Federation can successfully help our Jewish community organizations build up their endowments for future generations, this can only strengthen our entire community, which helps fulfill our mission.
This is who we are and what we do.
