HIAS – update

Back in February, I wrote about the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), one of the many organizations supported by our Federation dollars.  “HIAS works around the world to protect refugees who have been forced to flee their homelands because of who they are, including ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities.  For more than 130 years, HIAS has been helping refugees rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.”

As I am sure that you can imagine, HIAS has been incredibly busy these past few months, but we have successfully secured May 1 for HIAS Vice President for External Affairs, Riva Silverman, to come brief us on “A Jewish Response to the Global Refugee Crisis” as part of our new breakfast series.  Please register here or call the office at 783-7800.  (There is also still time to register for next week’s breakfast on April 25 with Stephen Berk, who will be briefing us on the new wave of anti-Semitism.)

These are challenging times and for many of us in the American Jewish community, Hillel’s words are resonating with us.  “If I am not for myself, who is for me?  And if I am only for myself, what am I?”  We created Federation’s new breakfast series to address some of our community’s greatest concerns.  I hope that you will partake, and if there are specific programs that you would like to see, please let me know.  As Hillel concluded, “And if not now, when?”
