Today is February 23, 2018 -
Last week, as I was sharing with you that P2G is my solution to the problem of the growing rift between Israeli and American Jewry, the Steering Committee of our P2G partner, Eshkol, was busy composing this beautiful letter of support to us. Coincidence? I think not. This is what our partnership is all about.
When times are difficult, it is too late to make the friends that we need to get through those times. Therefore, we have to make our friends during the good times. So while Federation’s national leaders are fighting on our behalf for pluralism in Israel, and we are enjoying the benefits of a 10-year-old friendship with Eshkol, we turn our attention locally to work on our local friendships.
This week, we invited several leaders of our local Muslim community to the Federation office for a “meet and greet.” In my welcoming remarks, I used the above line about making friends and it was warmly received. We did not have an agenda. We talked about our positive relations over the past few years, shared stories, and asked each other questions. We renewed our commitment to living in a culturally rich, diverse, and warm community.
To round out the busy week of community building, we also assembled leadership from 17 local Jewish organizations to learn more about the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) Life & Legacy program. Our community has an application pending with HGF, and if accepted, the program could revolutionize our entire Jewish community. This program could be the single largest undertaking that our Jewish community has ever assumed, and it will take all of us working together to make it happen. You will hear many more details about it in the coming months.
