Did you know? – Interlude

Purim starts Wednesday night, so it is time for my annual soapbox article encouraging people to go to a shul to celebrate the festivities.

Even if we just dressed in costumes and ate hamentashen, that would be enough, but we also hear the megillah, and maybe watch a skit or puppet show, and maybe have a l’chaim. Every synagogue will be a little different, but I promise you that all of them will be great. Please, bring your kids. It will be appropriate for every age. Click here for a list of the synagogues in our area.

Federation and Albany JCC’s annual Teen Purim Bash is scheduled for Thursday, March 21, at Lucky Strike in Crossgates Mall. Pre-registration by this Monday, March 18, is required. Click here for more information.

On Purim, we celebrate “good over evil.” Sadly, we were reminded again last night that evil has not been eradicated. Coming on the heels of last week’s anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric from our congress, two rockets were fired at Tel Aviv from Gaza last night, followed by retaliatory responses overnight. As always, we pray for the safety and security of our friends and loved ones in Israel.

Last night also saw the horrific murder of 49 worshippers in two New Zealand mosques. This morning, we reached out to all of our local Muslim friends. We also echo the statement published by JFNA:

We are devastated by the senseless hate-filled terror attack targeting two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. Our Jewish community mourns the tragic loss of 49 innocent lives. We know all too well the price of terrorism, racism and hatred.

No person should ever have to fear attending a sacred place of worship. The xenophobia that led to this unspeakable bloodshed must be condemned in no uncertain terms by leaders worldwide and the public-at-large. Hatred and vitriol must have no place to manifest. We cannot allow it to continue to violate the moral and ethical core of our society.
