Today is January 26, 2020 -
Last Thursday, the New York Times international edition published an anti-Semitic cartoon reminiscent of the 1930s. Saturday saw the horrific shooting in Poway, California. Yesterday, we commemorated Yom HaShoah, when we remember the Holocaust’s six million Jewish victims, and on Wednesday, we will commemorate Yom HaZikaron, when we mourn Israelis who either lost their lives protecting our homeland or were victims of terrorism.
I leave you with a poem by Israeli journalist and poet Tzur Ehrlich, both in the original Hebrew and a moving translation.
בהפרש של שבוע
שני ימי זכּרון סמוכים כּל שנה,
לטובת החשוב הכּללי
כּמה עולה לנו עם מדינה
וכמה עולה לנו בּלי.
A Week Apart
We have two memorial days in Israel every year:
One to remind us the cost of having a state,
One to remind us the cost of not.
May all their memories be for blessings!
