PROGRAM:
Oct 5: The Muck and the Mire – Europe ended the 19th century with hope, but soon descended into the hell of World War I.
Oct 12: Disappointment and Despair – Interwar Europe saw the rise of dictators and authoritarian governments. In Europe, democracy was in crisis.
Oct 19: Again, War – WWII was greater in scope and in murderous impact than the Great War. Its consequences resonate down to the present day.
Oct 26: The Iron Curtain rises and falls – The Soviet Union under Stalin and his successors appeared to be the unstoppable wave of the future. Internal contradictions in the communist world, together with staunch American-led resistance brought the Iron Curtain down.
