Chanukah on Jay: A Celebration That Unites Us

In the months ahead, you’ll hear a lot about the findings of our recent community-wide demographic study and how those insights will guide our strategic planning. But today, I want to share one fascinating data point.

When asked, “Which of the following activities, resources, programs, and events are you aware are supported by the Federation?” the number one response—above support for Israel or allocations to local organizations—was Chanukah on Jay.

That’s remarkable. In just four years, this event has drawn between 600 and 1,000 attendees annually, even when weather forced us indoors at Proctors. Clearly, this celebration resonates deeply.

For those new to our community, here’s the origin story: During Chanukah 2020, in the heart of COVID, I received a call from a community leader who was visiting Detroit. He said, “Rob, I’m at this really neat program called ‘Menorah in the D.’ The whole Jewish community is here. Can we do something like this at home?” Detroit’s event was a collaboration between their Jewish Federation and local Chabad, so I called our Chabad and asked, “Can we do this?” One year later, we did—and we’ve kept the tradition alive ever since.

Now, we’re thrilled to invite you to Year 5 of Chanukah on Jay—next Sunday, December 14, from 3:30–5:00 PM on Jay Street (in front of City Hall) in Schenectady!

Enjoy delicious food, an LED drum show, carnival games, a video game truck, and, of course, the menorah lighting. Free parking is available nearby. Bring your family, bring your friends—let’s celebrate together!

While this event is free for the community, nothing is truly free. Your donations make it possible for us to continue bringing vibrant Jewish experiences to our region. If you’d like to support Chanukah on Jay, please consider making a gift here.
