The Capital District Council for the Social Studies of New York State (CDCSS) is an organization of elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educators interested in history and the social sciences. At its annual dinner and awards ceremony last night, they presented our own Shelly Shapiro with the Partner in Education Award.

Shelly has been Federation’s Director of Community Relations (CRC) since 1997 and Director of Holocaust Survivors & Friends Education Center since 1985. Over the years, Shelly has provided a variety of educational programs for the community, both in partnership with CDCSS and through the CRC and Holocaust Center. Most notably, Shelly has coordinated two important annual workshops for our community teachers offering some of the world’s best lecturers:

1.      Teaching and Learning about Israel and the Middle East (since ~2010) and
2.      Teaching and Learning about the Holocaust (since ~1987),

the past several years in partnership with CDCSS.

Thank you Professor Stephen Berk for delivering both lectures this year.

This year, CDCSS also reported on our Capital Region Ukraine Support Rally and encouraged its members to contribute to the cause.

Special thanks to Shelly’s coworker Diane Freer, Coordinator of the Lectures by Survivors Program.

We thank CDCSS for recognizing the contributions of Federation, Holocaust Survivors & Friends Education Center, and Shelly Shapiro in furthering education for our community’s teachers and through them for our students.

Wishing Shelly Chazak, Chazak, V’nitchazek—Be strong, be strong, and let us be strengthened.
