Every few years, the Hebrew calendar lines up just right with America’s Gregorian calendar, creating an extra-long weekend. On Friday (and Saturday, for Orthodox and Conservative Jews in the diaspora), Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah at Sinai—celebrated with all-night study and, of course, cheesecake. On Monday, Memorial Day invites us to pause and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
The juxtaposition is striking but fitting: a blend of remembrance, gratitude, and continuity. Shavuot asks us to reflect on the values we’ve received, while Memorial Day reminds us of those who helped preserve the freedom to live by them. Together, they turn an ordinary long weekend into something a bit richer—part reflection, part appreciation, and part cheesecake.
