Fences, play and screenplay by August Wilson, is set in 1950’s Pittsburgh. However, its universal themes supersede any of its social features. Fences is a film about how environment shapes us. The American working class is more than just Midwestern and white in contrast to the stereotypes.

Black working class has analogous experiences and resentments as seen in other working class; their essentials may be distinct but no less painful and reasonably even more so.
